GA 10-28-11
Welcome – we will have solidarity visitors from The Coalition for Labor and Community Support
WG Report Backs
Legal – with the approval of yesterday’s GA, they’ve had some dialogue with police chief, deputy chief, and city’s lawyer. Meeting initiated by city to address health and safety concerns. It was a very positive conversation, and it is clear to them that we’re staying here. Concerns re: generator, food, port-a-john. They’d like to have a meeting to include people from relevant WGs, an informal discussion to find out the city’s concerns and how we can alleviate them.
Someone from Food, sanitation, and any relevant WGs should meet with Mark from Legal WG.
Finance WG – the finance WG now has identifying orange arm bands. If you see someone taking $ without one, stop them.
Facilitation WG – training tomorrow at 10AM and Noon. GA at 3PM. WG meeting after this GA today.
Education teach-ins – events tomorrow, a theater of the oppressed “train the trainer event” at women’s building on Central Ave. Theater of the oppressed is intended to help oppressed people express themselves. This workshop is for folks who want to be trained in being trainers.
Roundtable facilitated discussion tomorrow at 11AM, second session 6PM after GA. Why we’re here and what we want to do.
WG Proposals
Kids Stuff (Baby Bloc) – Rhana (sp?) tomorrow we’ll have a lot of people so the families in the WG want to have childcare all day. They need two adults here all times dedicated to the kids area. They’ve asked for volunteers and haven’t found them, so their next idea is to request $ from the finance committee to pay babysitters.
Concern – we didn’t spend an adequate amount of time looking for volunteers.
The proposal was withdrawn because the money will come from elsewhere.
Food – tomorrow will be a really big day and they really need volunteers, sanitation, cleanup, and dishes, etc… They’re already talking about scaling down.
Comfort – there is only one person from Comfort (Eric). He needs scheduling support.
Ben – Robin Hood Tax action – brought back from last Saturday with modified wording. The march already planned to the capital, and the proposal is to say that it’s also going to be counted as in support of the international call for the Robin Hood Tax. Does OA support the tax or is it participating in an action? “We’re participating in a march that is part of an international day of action calling for the Robin Hood Tax.”
OA is participating in a march from the encampment to the state cap on sat Oct 29 at 2Pm. This is part of an international day of action proposing a Robin Hood tax on financial transaction and financial trade. Trillions of dollars slosh around the global casino every day. These have contributed to the growing rift between the 1% and the rest of us,. These taxes would slow down these transactions and provide funds to environmental and social programs badly needed. This tax is endorsed by over a thousand economists and 800 gov’t officials from over 30 different countries.
We have consensus
President of the Cap District Labor Federation – Mary – We of the CDLF believe as you do. The United States of America belong to us. It does not belong to the 1%. So let us work together to work for the middle class. They want to know how they may assist us.
Other Business
Mark – the important issue of weather, how, and when to make demands for specific legislation is very much an order for the discussions roundtable tomorrow at 11 and 6.
Josh – Sanitation, safety, and finance now have identifying bandanas – finance, gold; sanitation white; safety is lavender.
Josh – Been on the board of directors of Citizen Action of NY (supports racial, social, and economic justice). They believe that puts them well within the 99% and they would like to provide whatever they are able.
PR - Hezzie – A note that will be hand delivered to the neighbors. Information about the good neighbor policy and to encourage feedback from the neighborhood.
Lief – a message from a group of city employees who work across the street and park right up here. They are afraid they will hit protesters and have difficulty parking when they come in the morning to park. Please self police and take a few steps back when employees are trying to park.
Andy – Teachers and professors are here and want to speak because they have lost so much (programs, educators, and now about to lose a tax on millionaires and billionaires).
Abe – with the inclement weather, he is no longer offering his PA system.
Josh – Wants to start a work bank so people with nothing to do can be found people who need people to do things.
Ben – Occupy Oakland – we need to start preparing to have a productive discussion and move forward to building a general strike in NY. Please start discussion with people around you to build for one ASAP.
Jenny – Willing to facilitate the open mic after the GA
Mark – education and teaching WG – they have requests for teach-ins. It’s better to bring them to the WG to schedule to minimize conflict. Go to their message online to post proposals for teach-ins.
