First: To do this, I'd need donations of yarn and/or plastic bags (perhaps the ones that Honest Weight rejects for their own reuse because they have small holes). We'd also need crochet hooks. I have some to get started but possibly not enough to go around.
Second: If there's anyone else who knows how to crochet and esp how to teach crochet (just a matter of being able to trouble-shoot someone else's work, and be gentle and patient), it *really* helps to have a helper if there's more than 2-3 students.
Third: It is possible to make yarn out of plastic bags, and also possible to use "plarn" to crochet relatively warm sleeping mats. Or so says the internet. I haven't done this yet and imagine it would be a sorta lengthy project, but if we pass it off to each other througout the day at the occupation we might be able to get something going.
Also, as a matter of community outreach and good will: I know a very simple and warm hat pattern that I could teach to relative beginners. We could make bunches (they're remarkably quick to do up) and donate them with little "Occupy Albany" tags on them, to homeless shelters in the area and to flood survivors in Schoharie.
I'm available essentially 9am-2pm Mon-Thurs, with spotty availability at other times. This would need to be during the daytime.
I guess I could use some co-conspirators, some help with recruiting and collecting donations, and any suggestions anyone might have about timing, location, getting the word out, etc.

I love this idea. I am totally swamped with my job and doing this PR thing. But let me know if this turns into a photo-op that you think is press worthy.
