Good to see the media links posted, but I think you've been missing the almost daily run of letters to the editor of the TU (some pro and some anti, of course) -- and I do not note this only because my wife and I have authored two of those letters (ah, ego)! A letter today (11.16.11) deals with questions about selective enforcement of the (curfew) law and contains the too little quoted 1894 comment by French author Anatole France: "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread." You're right, I haven't been including any letters to the editor, mainly for time reasons. I also have not been including blogs. But anyone who sees useful media links should feel free to post them on this thread.

Caroline, I disagree with your opinion that this was a good article. I actually just made my way to this thread to post what an awful piece of reporting this was. The writer has made assumptions that this model is what Occupy Albany is pushing for, he did not frame it as a teach-in or informational session, which it was. DanielR

I have to agree with DanielR. In fact, I came to this page for the same reason as DanielR and right after I posted the following comment with respect to the GA minutes for 11.27.11:
The absence of any mention of Parecon ("participatory economics") in the 11.27.11 GA minutes tends to confirm my suspicion that this morning's (11.28.11) TU article ("Occupy says it's time to shift focus") was reporting on the 11.27.11 teach-in by Colin and Nick about Parecon and not, as the article suggests, on how Colin and Nick "illustrated and articulated precisely how, if given the chance, Occupy Albany would change the economic structure of our country." Please stay alert to the possibility that this may require public clarification.

Daniel and LSL,
I wasn't at the teach-in on Sunday, so I just meant to say that the tone of the article was positive.
But, from what you both say, it sounds like the reporter misrepresented some of the content of the teach-in, right? If that's the case, it probably is worth letting the TU know.

I wasn't at the teach-in either, but it does seem that the reporter failed to distinguish between an educational program and an outline of OA goals. I think we have to see if Colin and Nick agree with my reaction and that of Daniel -- and how they feel about contacting the TU in this regard. It also may be something for the Media/PR WG to consider when that group gets together.

Hezzie from PR here.
Thanks all for the feedback. My initial thought was that it was great that TU was finally reporting on issues that concern Occupy, instead of simply arrests and the occupation itself, but I also agree it was heavy-handed to the extent that it blurred the line between, one workshop and overall Occupy goals and directions.
I will follow-up with Bryan Fitzgerald and make the correction.
I will also remind everyone speaking to the press to be clear when using the words 'we.'

Letter from PR to Times Union:
Hello Bryan,
Thank you for the great coverage on Colin and Nick's teach-in on Sunday. It was an informative lecture and certainly involved ideas compatible with some of Occupy's ideals.
While I think that it is entirely accurate to say that Occupy has decided to shift focus from the recent arrests, and the act of Occupying itself, towards articulating its primary concerns, I believe you mistook an educational teach-in on one particular subject for a tenet of Occupy Albany's focus.
This sentence here may be the one causing the most confusion:
'During an hourlong presentation in Academy Park, Donnaruma and Nick Partyka, doctoral students in political economics at the State University at Albany, illustrated and articulated precisely how, if given the chance, Occupy Albany would change the economic structure of our country.'
Colin's presentation was merely an educational workshop, rather than an agreed course of action.
If you ever need clarification on the applicability of statements made by individual members, please don't hesitate to get in contact with us here at the PR working group. We are happy to help out in any way we can.
Thanks again for taking the time to report on the issues and not just the Occupation and arrests. You will be hearing about more precise articulated concerns and strategic actions this month as we move into the next phase of Occupy.
-Hezzie Johanson (Occupy Albany PR Working Group)

Bryan's response FYI:
Fitzgerald, Bryan bfitzgerald@timesunion.com 5:40 PM to me
Thanks for the kind words, Hezzy. You’re right. I should have said “members of Occupy Albany” when referring to the plan, not simply referring to it as Occupy Albany’s plan.
Very interesting stuff they presented, by the way.
