(Note: Suggest that the policy be to start a thread for the minutes of each meeting, and if people have amendments or additions, these can simply be posted as responses to the thread - what do you think?)
Minutes for the Political and Electoral Reform Group
October 21, 2011 after the GA (Approx 7:15pm)
Facilitated by John Jaye
The meeting lasted just over an hour and there were approximately 15 people in attendance. No formal minutes were taken so this is a summary from memory (Note: please add replies if I am mistakenly missing or mis-characterizing anything).
The group was generally described as being an offshoot of the group of the same name at the NYCGA, and that the goal was to discuss needed political and electoral reforms and be able to make proposals to and advise the GA on these issues.
People circulated in through the meeting and introductions were made as people joined. With introductions, people also shared their general views and reason for attending, and discussion was had surrounding these views. Some general areas of concern were the influence of corporate money on politics, corporate personhood, and the ... (Note: I can't recall the specific, so please chime in via "reply" if I missed something).
It was discussed that there may be other similar groups forming which may result in forming demands/solutions and that it is important that these groups coordinate and organize around each other.
A few logistical items were discussed:
Regarding minutes...
It was discussed that we need to keep minutes of each meeting, a responsibility which needs to be circulated and shared.
It was requested that people, if comfortable, bring laptops to the meeting, so that there is at least one laptop present to take notes.
Regarding meetings...
It was discussed that there will be daily meetings and one large weekly meeting, to be determined.
It was suggested that meetings during the weekday take place after the GA and meetings on weekends take place in the afternoon before GA's, which seemed generally agreeable.
It was decided that for now, all meetings will take place after GA, so that they can be announced at the GA, and at the next meeting, switching to the before slot on weekends will be discussed and decided on.
A day for the large daily meeting was not decided on.
Regarding distance participation...
It was discussed that there might be some way to bring people in from a distance via a skype-like system; it was noted that skype has posed some logistical challenges at the NYCGA.
It was also noted that the forum was available to continue discussion for those not able to attend meetings regularly.
The meeting was adjourned.
