I thought it'd be good if there were a LGBT specific grievance, and may go hand out flyers tomorrow (in some crazy faerie outfit probably).
So I wanted to ask for input on these two things.
this is from my organization conversation.
Hope this shows that LGBT are involved.
I. LGBT Grievance.
I'm trying to figure out how to word an LGBT specific grievance to suggest to the NYC Occupy folks.
I'm trying to match the tone of the original list: www.dailykos.com/story/2011/10/01/1021956/-First-official-statement-from-Occupy-Wall-Street
I don't feel I'm quite nailing this. Any ideas?
DRAFTS:
They have stigmatized LGBT people with institutional and societal discrimination that denies their inalienable human right to exist safely as who they are, with dignity, equally protected under the law.
or
They have stigmatized minority sexualities and genders with institutional discrimination that denies the inalienable human right to exist safely as who we are, with dignity, equally protected under the law.
or
They have precluded our natural sexual and gender manifestation with social and institutional discrimination that denies the inalienable human right to be who we are, safely, with dignity and equal protection of the law.
II. Nat. Coming Out Day & Occupy.
I'm working on a flyer to hand out possibly tomorrow. Thoughts? I need to shorten it.

HOMO/TRANSPHOBIA KILLS and LGBT AMERICANS HAVE NO FEDERAL NON-DISCRIMINATION PROTECTIONS while our PLIGHT goes largely IGNORED.
Mostly Because THE LGBT MOVEMENT is CONTROLED by CORPORTATE ENTITIES dubbed “GAY INC” – subservient to Big Oil, Banks & Insurance (and the DNC).
THE GRASSROOTS has REBELLED in the last 3 years, staging
-A National March on Washington, October 2009,
-Independent DA/CD all over the country,
-Chaining themselves to the White House,
-The QUEER SOS (a 37 day/night vigil outside of Senator Gillibrand’s Campaign Offices last October),
-The Grand Central Die-In (a 300 person flash mob in NYC Grand Central Terminal - watch on YouTube).
GRASSROOTS ACTIVISTS are finally DEMANDING: Full Federal CIVIL RIGHTS/NON-DISCRIMINATION Protections for SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY, via The American Equality Bill (AEB) (on FB).
But GAY INC. is blocking this because it doesn’t want to disrupt the election of Democrats.
WE NEED HELP TO BE FREE & SAFE TO BE OUR TRUE SELVES.
IT IS OUR HUMAN RIGHT. IT IS INALIENABLE – YET DENIED US.
PLEASE HELP US. ADD “LGBT CIVIL RIGHTS EQUALITY” to our Grievances.
WITHOUT EQUALITY – and WITH DISCRIMINATION – Gov’t keeps us ALL DOWN.

“GAY INC” is what we call it, because our cause is controlled by a couple of huge corporations (Human Rights Campaign & National Gay & Lesbian Task Force).
And NOT ONE main LGBT organization operates democratically, but instead has self-appointed, self-perpetuating boards of the financial elite, with no public processes.
HRC’s main donors include: Citi Bank, Bank of America, Deloitte, Prudential, Nationwide Insurance, Chevron, BP, Chase, Goldman Sachs, IBM, DELL, Google, Microsoft, Lexus.
So Big Banks, Big Oil, Big Insurance – keep us from demanding equality, while we bow to the DNC, and beg for crumbs. Meanwhile Republicans preach hatred with impunity.
For 20 million LGBT Americans, this means rejection by their own society and families, to the point many kill themselves, while all are subjected to a religious intolerance that seeks to deny them their soul’s journey on earth.
The survivors suffer exponentially higher rates of mental disorders, depression, anxiety, and generally, a forced emotional isolationism starting early and lasting a lifetime.
It is still LEGAL to fire people in most states, deny them housing, or refuse them access to federally funded programs and services – solely because they are LGBT.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and related laws OUTLAW discrimination based on “race, color, sex, national origin and religion” to change these plights.
It’s time it includes SO&GI and that LGBT Human Rights are protected.
PLEASE HELP US. JOIN OUR CALL FOR JUSTICE & EQUALITY
JOIN: The American Equality Bill (on FB). GetEQUAL (on FB). Queer Rising (on FB).
Also I would talk about how corporate america markets to the gay folks in branding, advertising, coporately backing pride events etc....who then turn over the money that they make off of us to conservative causes. Claiming they want to back us and support us.
I'm thinking more along the lines that it's important to be present and visible as LGBT people, and that it's an important audience to educate about our cause. They will care about it I expect, and if not, that'll be informative.
The messages don't jive entirely, but that's more a limitation of the existing wording, than a principled disconnect perhaps. The wording is rather focused on economics, but these folks didn't just happen to come together and write these things up out of the blue.
I agree entirely about the underlying use of social issues to divide, and this could be a resonating point going forward.
I'm not feeling strongly drawn to taking this all down there. I'm more likely to get dressed up and go with the faeries - who are expressing interest. I'm not sensing much interest from the LGBT activists... but hard to tell.
Big picture, I'd just like them informed, so when our moment comes, and it will, they will be supportive and perhaps join us too.
"More than 10% of the 99% are only 12% equal under the law. It's time to GetEqual."
We are approaching the speak out at Occupy Boston about the importance of coming out for equality and justice whether lgbtq or not. I know the folks in New Mexico(?) are taking on corporate homophobia naming names in who supports the hate campaigns with profits they make. For it to make sense, it has to come from the feet on the ground and what resonates with y'all...don't force it if you don't feel it.
I don't see this as their movement v. our movement....if we had the 99% of the population demanding lgbt equality along with demands for democracy and an end to corporate personhood, you bet we'd be equal already....there are more trans people involved in the Occupy Boston than volunteering for our transgender political coalition in the day to day....i wouldn't have known that unless i went down there and saw it for myself. lgbtq people have been fighting for equality and justice in many different ways since we were first discriminated against....and we will long after we are equal under the law.
so this is from emails i had in exchange in working with us what do you all think.
