Albany is home to The Albany Free School, the longest running inner-city independent alternative school in the United States, and the Harriet Tubman Democratic School. Let's propose a working group to build on this available experience and develop a parallel / alternative education system.

School board candidate forum Monday Oct 24 6-8pm at the Albany Public Library Main Branch on Washington. Short walk from the occupation. It might be interesting for some folks from OA to go over. Pls pay attention to racial makeup of any group wanting to participate, though. This city's schools have big majorities of black kids, and this event is organized by the NAACP.

I think getting the free school involved would be awesome. They probably are in a lot of ways already. We should also reach out to the colleges. Some of us already have been. There are many people who have devoted their lives to learning and would love the opportunity to share their knowledge with the world. Any of us with educational connections should reach out. Education is huge in what we are trying to do and people will be willing if we reach out to them. All we have to do is ask.

I am a graduate student who is completing a dissertation in Political Theory, a subfield of Political Science. I am very interested in sharing my love of ideas with others.

I hope to rename the "Community teach-ins" working group the Education working group, broadening its mandate. Volunteers wanting to help make this happen please message me.
Several subgroups could address teach-ins/discussions at the encampment & in the community, as well as other important issues of educational policy such as fighting back against cuts in public education and SUNY, and broader pedagogical issues.
Involving the Free School is a great idea; contacts with the free school to arrange presentations by Free School at the enampment, and by Occupy Albany at the Free School are very welcome.
