(i'm re-posting this from the general discussion board)
thanks to everyone who has come to our meetings, volunteered their services, donations, kitchens, etc..i'm a little overwhelmed and apologize ahead of time if we can't keep up with all you.
over the last 2 days we had 2 meetings, this is what has come out of them:
first, a disclaimer. OA should not expect us to have a fully functioning kitchen and comfort station up and running on the first day (or first several days) there are too many unpredictable variables to account for; we don't know how many people will show, maybe the cops throw us out the first day, we don't yet have/or know all the resources we need, etc. we expect the effort will evolve along with the protest and that it will be much easier to coordinate volunteers and resources once the camp is actually established. so we encourage occupiers to come prepared with their own supplies and food.
the plan:
Wednesday at 5pm we will be cleaning the furnace (84 grand st.)
Thursday at noon we will be meeting at the furnace to prep food for friday
Friday at 9am we will be meeting at the furnace to finish cooking the food to be served at the park at 3pm (plenty of time before the GA). we're going to shoot for feeding about 150-200 people.
On Friday, the first thing we want to do is establish a donation drop off point. from there we can take donated food to the kitchen to be prepared.
Friday night and Saturday morning we will be preparing breakfast for Saturday and whatever we can for the next days meals. Our main focus right now is to get us through the weekend with the hope that 1) we don't get kicked out 2) we'll have a better idea of our needs 3) once camp is established it will be easier to coordinate a volunteer base, call for/receive donations, and pull from a larger pool of ideas.
Abe has been working on putting together a makeshift sanitation station for hand and dish washing on site.
Water has been a tricky issue. We need donations of large water coolers with spouts if anyone has one they can loan out for awhile to keep plenty of water on site.
we also need an idea of what to do with waste water from the sanitation station, possibly a gray water filtering system (workshop idea?)
We are scouting out other kitchens, preferably large commercial kitchens that will allow us to use them throughout the whole occupation. there have been several possibilities floated.
there has been talk to doing some cooking outside, propane camp burners could be used to keep a pot of soup hot, make coffee and tea and some outdoor grilling. we ran this idea by legal they seemed to think it would be ok.
that's all for now, i will try to put up a formal donations wishlist in the morning.
