TO THE STREETS, WE ARE THE 99 %

I've started a newsletter called Occupied Albany. I was hoping to have copied to hand out at the GA but that didn't happen due to software issues. BUT, I'm working on it. The email is OccupyAlbanyNewsletter (at) riseup (dot) net.

Eddie, one is being organized. I will be sure to post details when I find them out. Of course improvised marches on the way to the meeting is always great too Dave, thanks for sharing. It would be great for us to get copies so we can hand them out when we flyer. You may also want to post that in the media group.

Hello Everyone - I have come across a person that might help our cause tremendously. His name is Gary Sinise and you all might know him as the actor that played Lt. Dan in the movie "Forrest Gump" He has a website - www.garysinisefoundation.org I think we need to enable his foundation to support our cause. If someone from the "Outreach Group" is willing to contact him and see about getting his support that would be most grateful. Thank you all, peace and bright blessings to you all and your families.

1) Go to the DSS office, talk to people, hand out flyers. I know when I'm sitting there for hours, waiting for bureaucratic bullshit for our food stamps, there's a lot of people pissed off and ready for some change.
2) I'd like to again push for my proposal I made two weeks ago: as soon as we have a location and time, knock on the doors of everyone on your block. Talk to your neighbors. If you're spending more time on the internet organizing this than you are talking face-to-face with strangers, you're not making the best of your time. There were 300 people at the last meeting. Each one of them could easily inspire 10 other people each to come out to the occupation. Talk to your neighbors, coworkers, family, workers at the businesses in your neighborhood, etc. There's no reason that we won't have 3000+ people if each one of us commits to this.
Social media is easy, and creates an often false allure that you're reaching lots of people. When you shake a stranger's hand after a good conversation and say, "I'll see you next Sunday," you'll immediately know how much more important this is. When you're doing it, question any reasons for anxiety about doing it, any tendencies to not engage people, any fears you have. You might realize that your internet use has impeded your ability to feel comfort and joy in these interactions. I know it's this way for me. And working past it is liberating.
Cheers,
Ben

@stephanie the next outreach meeting will be after the General Assembly meeting. That could be anytime because the General Assembly will meet as long as it needs to and then break out into working groups.
There is no email address I'm assuming because everyone believes that it would take all day to answer emails.
Thanks for flyering, let me know if you need more.

Hi I am not a bona fide member of this group but I wanted to pass along an idea I had: if you are looking for groups to target for potential supporters, I recommend you consider reaching out to state workers. There is a great deal of pent up frustration there that if you could successfully tap into, it could be very helpful. Just sayin'. Thanks for listening.

Are you guys planning an info table at the occupation? I'm on facilitation & logistics and am thinking about a calendar of events. Working group meetings, GAs, classes, performances... Along with basic info like bathrooms that are open at various times, etc. Makes sense to me to have it with an info table. Let's coordinate!

Emma let me know what you think we'll need and we can work on it. Maybe some google docs so we can collab?

I wasn't thinking about what you'd need at the table. I was wondering if a table was planned, so we could coordinate a calendar. I think facil & logistics will take on the calendar if no one else is already doing it. I'm sorry but my plate is full and I can't offer to take on anything much else related to an info table (though I could help with staffing it).
On another note: If we do have an info table, and I think we should, we can put something out (or if it's staffed, the staffer can have this info) with a few cell #s if any American Sign Language speakers show up and want a bit of interpreting or anything. I am NOT volunteering to solo interpret at the GA nor am I volunteering to coordinate GA interpreting (some folks have been raising this issue), but I'm available as an interpreter if I'm on-site. Whoever ends up being the keeper of this kind of info, lemme know...

I replied to your post in another thread (in the general forum) regarding an info table.

I would also like to help. Currently I am working with Music, People's Safety, and Legal WG, but I have a large network across the country and can add my efforts to outreach.
Proposal: Can we bring up a letter writing event for Scott Olsen, Vet and IVAW member who was critically injured during Occupy Oakland, in order to show solidarity?
His address is currently: USMC Scott Olsen Highland Hospital 1411 East 31st Street Oakland, CA 94602
