I don't know if you guys would consider this "Arts & Music," I think I would, but I've been reading a lot about a volunteer library occupy wall street has down in nyc. peopleslibrary.wordpress.com/They have everything from casual reading to reference books about law, for example, or mass movements. I think this would be a really cool idea to facilitate in Albany. I have a library science degree and am a working librarian. I know some other librarians who are involved in this movement who would love to do something like this. <br> Let me know if people would be down for this.

Yeah! This sounds like a great idea. The Furnace on Grand street already has a small library of zines and books and I would imagine loaning them to an 'occupation library' would be possible as long as we could get people to be responsible for keeping a system of borrowing.

Awesome!! We would have to organize a borrowing system. Down in NYC, they have barcodes and a scanner that were donated from LibraryThing (I think) and the books are organized through LibraryThing's website. I'm not sure if we could get an operation going like that, perhaps if LibraryThing would also donate those things to us. As far as books go, I know for a fact that libraries sometimes get WAY more donations than they can handle. A lot of times, they even just put them in the lobby with a "free" sign. So when the time comes, I'll start asking local libraries if there are any books they can donate to the movement. Donations from The Furnace and anyone who wants to donate of course, would be greatly appreciated too!

From day one a library has been forming in the park. What is needed(besides more resources) is people and a system to run it. I believe that after making initial connections with fellow human beings, education is the next big step. Librarians and educators of the world unite! You will be needed to fight the ignorance that divides us. A working group is needed, so someone please start it.

I was at the GA today and mentioned that I see myself putting my energy into helping the library at Occupy Albany become bigger and better. I am not sure how to proceed. I would be happy to coordinate a working group but will be out of the country from this Friday (December 2nd) to the 24th. For now I am posting this to see if others are interested. I can also be contacted at exshomeret@gmail.com. This week I am hoping to do some work to get the library tent more ready for winter. I will be looking for some pallets to put on the ground and will try to get some more tarps and other weatherproofing up on top and around the sides. I think without this the books there are not going to last long. Once we strengthen the library structure we can begin thinking about next steps.
