**We value PR because a positive and identifiable message will allow the group to grow in numbers and acquire sympathetic supporters which will increase the likelihood of the success of our movement. In our mind this is a movement that must gain numbers and mass not one that is standing in opposition to other citizens (the rest of the 99%).
-it is important to co-ordinate with other media working groups. Is it possible/desired to meet in same location in our separate groups?
-compile master list of media outlets -both traditional and non-traditional.
-PR group must remain very educated both on OA actions as well as OA belief and related ‘political’ information. We must present ourselves as the educated and informed citizens we are.
-Some adjectives to describe us: diverse, hopeful but fed up with current system, part of the 99%, wanting a real voice in our government, patriotic, inclusive, individuals coming together, non-violent.
-make sure all know the distinction between when speaking for the movement vs speaking as an individual.
-De-escalation force & intermediaries – this dovetails with occupation team, but we feel it is very important to maintain good PR with the police etc and maintain our non-violent stance. We should identify community members who know their local police & ask them if they can be part of intermediaries. Build trust and relationships.
Less specifically PR:
Identify possible symbolic opportunities for actions:
Ie when is governor in town? Bankers convention etc?
Link between Wall Street and Albany. NY is state most affected by it.
-Potential threats to the clarity of our message
1. not maintaining a clear enunciated message at all times
2. not maintaining our educated, preparedness and proactiveness in general
3. media miscategorization of protesters
4. co-option by established groups
5. protesters hijacking press for their own individual cause at the expense of clarity of the movement.
6. acts of violence
7. image ‘red flags’ in postings such as violent words etc
8. accidental inaccuracy of info posted by moderators on FB, website etc
Possibly for GA:
-what PR does – accurately portrays our movement to the press, media, observers etc.
-active or passive media attention? ie should we be crafting succinct press releases in advance of events? Our group thinks yes. In order to be able to present the message with our voice first, and keep press abreast. As long as it doesn’t compromise any stealth strategy.
- votes on a succinct summation sentence of OA?
-can we vote to identify as ‘peaceful/non-violent'?
-remind people that FB & msg boards can be seen by the public, police, govt etc. How should we deal with inappropriate or violent posts?
-Request to be kept apprised of meetings, direct actions or incidents so that we can be ready for press.
- reminder that appearance has impact & you will be judged
